Not to Hard For Three Six Mafia, They Win an Oscar - 1:54 p.m.
So I'm writing the 16 blocks review, sound off on the TV, and out the corner of my eye I see singing and dancing going on. I could've swore I had the Academy Awards on. There was Taraji P. Henson singing that pimp song from Hustle and Flow. I actually switched channels to make sure it was on channel 7. Yup. She's letting out 'bitch' and 'pimp' on broadcast TV, on this movie award show with an audience so far removed from understanding how hard it is for a pimp, this ensemble of rappers and an actress turned singer for a day that it was almost embarrassing. At least I was embarrassed for them.
You know there were some people who actually thought Taraji might have an album out. So confused and detached: "Is that Beyonce?!'" Hmm, no, she sure wasn't Beyonce, not even Ashanti, but the shriek she let out at the end of the song was something out of Showtime at the Apollo. Don't get me wrong, I got love for Taraji but you could tell she was nervous singing the song. She's looking out from the stage into a place filled with wide-eyed stares and open mouths, thinking why am I singing this song and why here. That last gasp of air was her letting out the tension and running for the exit. Some group of Academy producers got a chuckle out of the whole thing. They had to know how misplaced it would be. It's all in fun though. As payment for the free entertainment the Academy figured they'd give em a statue as well.
Yeah, Three Six Mafia won an Oscar for "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" - Best Original Song in a Movie. Which made for another odd moment as they proceeded to shout out people during their acceptance speech; they're hugging the mike and talking over each other as if they were at The BET or that god-awful Source Awards. They were truly surprised and happy, but the result is that they made for the most talked about moment of the night. In a "did that just happen?" kind of way. If you missed it.. here's the clip (windows media) from when I caught it, until Jon Stewart finishes it. comments (42) |
