Akon’s Faked Criminal Past: He Was Never “Locked Up”

On the heels of The Smoking Gun revealing that The Los Angeles Times was fooled by a con man, there was a buzz that they were working on another big story: a mutli-platinum singer was going to be exposed.

The first name that came to mind was Mr. Blonde Ambition. Other than R. Kelly, what platinum singer do you think would have dirt to be kicked around? Ciara is a boy! <

< joke.

Turns out the expose was about Akon's fictional criminal past: his three years in jail - which inspired "Locked Up" - was actually three years probation. Akon (Aliaune Thiam) has six arrests, one a felony for gun possession (

that’s where the mugshot is from)

Akon mugshot from a New Jersey gun possession arrest

but none of them resulted in jail sentences.

The Smoking Gun writes.. “If there needs to be further evidence to rebut the singer’s claims about being imprisoned from 1999-2002, Akon’s own son Tyler could serve as Exhibit A.

According to a paternity action filed late last year in Fulton County, Georgia, the boy was born on July 26, 2001, which roughly puts his date of conception in late-October 2000 (again squarely in the middle of a prison term that Akon never served).”

The article goes into the kind of detail that very few will peel through. But if you’re one of those few, here is.. Akon’s Con Job

Why did they look into Akon’s past in the first place?

Remember this incident…

At a December 3 court appearance, he was released without bail after a computer check turned up no outstanding warrants and no prior criminal history. That raised a red flag at The Smoking Gun. They wondered how a singer who once talked about his time in a Georgia prison.. “I fought almost every day for two years,” in the process becoming a “champion” who prevailed over both big and small inmates because, “I knew where to hit you to knock you out, so I didn’t fear you.” and always reminding people of the “notorious” nature of his car theft ring..

How could this guy not have anything on record?

They dug and found Bosnia stories.

Akon is currently touring in Africa. His publicist had no comment.

He lied about being in jail, so what’s the big deal, all entertainers lie anyways. That was still a great song (Locked Up).

WHATS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT BEING IN JAIL THAT SHIT DONT MAKE U HARD

4 nyla Fri, Apr 18, 2008 - 4:17 pm

errbody always talkin bout being real and keepin it real. A blatant lie has been presented & purchased and no one cares that they’ve been duped? lol You’ve got to be kidding me.

I remember when music was all about cold hearts, hard times, bitter tastes left in ya mouth situations but most of all REAL deal. Now some music is as real as a man made diamond (CZ) with cloudy insides but nevertheless reflects some light which makes people still want it.

Oh well I guess.

I don’t feel duped at all because I look at music for just what it is….MUSIC. These people aren’t role models they are just entertainers. I could care less that he lied about what he did in his personal life. We all have lied about something one time or another.

6 SAxlerod Sun, Apr 20, 2008 - 11:36 pm

These people are entertainers. They are here to make money, get your attention, retain your attention and loyalty. AKON and his record company did that. Now that’s AKON’s back story is being called “A-CON”, there’s nothing that you can do. He has your money and will continue to have your money. Some of the streets have made Akon and it’s hard to take back what he’s achieved. It’s like Barry Bonds with the steroid issue. He’s too PAID for anyone to do anything about it. I guarantee that AKON and his record company are in damage control mode right now. I’m in no way saying what AKON did was right, Konvict or not you’ll see how he’ll turn this mishap into further success. He’s not stupid, those who believed this back story are…..

Its amazing how many people excuse his lies for the notion “all entertainers lie”.  Why wasn’t James Frey given that benefit?  Or Vanilla Ice?  So we just pick and choose, huh?  The thing that makes it unbelieveable is the fact that this is what his career was based on.  If it was a sidenote, then it wouldn’t matter, but it was the foundation for his career.  Just like him coming from Africa (technically he is from America as he was born in St. Louis).  He is a modern day minstrel show in the industry, one who feels he needs to showcase his “equipment” to sell records.  For the record, I am Jamaican before anyone thinks I am a white guy haing, but I am telling it as it is.  The industry’s bitch, the entertainer in even blacker face (no pun intended), one yearning for streed cred and African loyalty but lacking in both.  And to top it off, he’s vocally capable as Bob Dylan or T-Pain (and T-Pain has proven otherwise in some instances).  Real african singer: Lucky Dube, RIP.

Can’t we find some real issues to be up in arms over. So what he lied about his persnal life, he still sang the songs. His career is based on being a good performer not being in and out of jail. I am quite sure that you have lied about something just like I have. Should people be up in arms about our lies. Get over it, it’s not liKE he lied about killing someone. HE’S JUST AN ARTIST!!!!!

maybe he will get locked up.  Thats where all the rappers need to be anyway. Dumbass thugs influence the youth. Everyone knows how easily they believe things they hear.  Then they go out and commit crimes because they let their heroes think for them.

18 D-Rose Tue, May 20, 2008 - 5:25 pm

he just made it up to make a hit in the world just becuz he is a good boy and he cant git in trouble hes just good like that!!!

19 kristine Thu, Aug 21, 2008 - 6:00 pm

This is just proof how fake Mainstream HipHop has become and the reason for allegations of the industry being DEAD! People keep saying it is nothing but entertainment yet it is not entertainment when you glorify a lifestyle that is making people from the ghetto/hood fall into a lifestyle of crime because they believe they will MAKE IT doing it like “they do.” Fuck your image and Fuck your rhymes.

21 Above Mon, Sep 08, 2008 - 7:13 pm

X, just because a rapper or singer glorifies selling drugs or robbing and stealing doesn’t mean that anyone has to follow there lead. It’s not the industry that is the problem, it’s the lack of parenting in the houses that’s the problem my friend.

22 Sammi Fri, Nov 07, 2008 - 10:27 am

How do we know that he was not actually put in jail and besides who really gives a damn akon is thebest singer and most inspiring since like bob marley and why is it any of our business we think it must be great for the rich and famous but it doesnt sound so great look at 50 cent how many times has he been shot - like three and akon you have so many people that are against him for what he ahs done or has claimed to have done in the past, and only a few people respect him for all the good he has done here is the problem with fans they always remember every single thing done wrong but what about the good lets see Akon has helped many children in Africa and he brings entertainment to all the people in the world

if you are going to complain why dont YOU try being him for a day see how you like it

the people of today need to grow up and get over themselves

i am only 14 yrs old and adults are always complaining about teens doing drugs and such stop generalizing and try to help those who have a problem if someone were there to help Akon when he was dealing then he would not have had all the heartache and pain that he does now

i always say that everything happens for a reason so maybe this happened for a reason lets see if this never happened to him we wouldnt have some of his amazing songs open up your eyes and stop generalizing and judging there are black white red and yellow skinned people but are we really any different?

23 tunji Wed, Oct 05, 2011 - 9:36 am

i believe most of the hip hop artist live a lifestyle that shouldn’t be emulated by anyone,so to lie like that is the least of all their secrecy.

24 ansar Fri, Mar 30, 2012 - 4:41 pm
