An Internet Petition Finally Works: Jena 6 Mychal Bell Released from Jail
Yesterday, Mychal Bell was released from jail. A great thing, if for one, soothing the concerns I’ve heard from some people about the time they took off from work, hopped on buses, money spent, etc, being a waste because the kid was still in jail.
The show of support last week is a huge reason why his quick trial and conviction was thrown out. Had a huge protest been organized, police barricades and all, and a hundred or so people stood outside that courthouse, there wouldn’t have been any pressure for the Louisiana court to rethink their decision.
The media attention made a huge difference.
On another level if there was never a flame put to the situation on blogs, petitions signed, that spread to radio, forced the major media to cover it even more than they did, there is no doubt that on September 20, Mychal Bell would have been sentenced to some hard years in prison.
He’s not out of the water, next week Bell returns to court this time to be tried as a juvenile. If he’s found guilty he could be held until he’s 21 - what’s that 3 years? As the only one of the Jena 6 to go to trial, what happens with his case is key to the future of the rest of his friends.
On the surface it does sound wild to say a white kid got stomped out, but we’ll let these guys go free and clean. That’s surface level though. When you look at the timeline of events and I personally think of the many fights I saw on school grounds (some of them ‘beatdowns’) it would be crazy to hear that any of those kids at that time got locked up for years - even months.
Jena 6 - I’m talking probation for all of them.
It’s f*cked for Justin Barker, but he had no problem taunting them.. which was.. kid stuff.
It’s all any of their involvement is and they should be treated as such.
I will throw this out here though.. had this been 6 white kids kicking a black guy’s ass. Would we be happy if they had their charges reduced and got off free and clean?

Hell no we wouldn’t have been. We would have had AL Sharpton & Co. protesting that this was a Hate crime and that these kids should be locked up for what they did. I have never once thought that they should get off scott free…However charging these young African American boys (young lives that have yet to have been started) with attempted murder is ridiculous. They’ll carry a record with them for the rest of their lives, and never amount to nothing, live off the system. Of course that’s the worst case scenario. But it’s reality for alot of Black American’s today.
Sure what they did was wrong. The events that lead up to that event were also dead wrong. For someone to even say that the noose hangings and the school yard fight weren’t related is smoking crack. (probably smoking the same crack that was given to them by the CIA…but I digress (true story look it up on youtube))

Punishments are necessary for EVERYONE involved white, black, asian, whatever. Wrong is wrong and it needs to be treated and handled as such regardless of race

I think that it isn’t right because if it was 6 white people that beat a black boy’s butt and they would probably not get charged. Mychal Bell jumped a white boy who later on that day attended a party, where I am from a white boy was in the hospital for days stitched all up and the boy just got sent to alternative school, the prosecutor thought because they were in a small town no one would care, be honest, who cares because he got his ass jumped? nobody ppl get they ass jumped all day on youtube that shit was f**ked up and they know it, he just had a background so now they trying to cover their ass. leave them damn kids alone, they life already f**ked up cuz tha shit on they record.
I know what you mean every last one of you are right. It was very wrong for them to charge Mychal Bell the way they did. If he and the others were charged then the white boy should’ve been charged to. I know violence isn’t the answer to everything but somethimes it’s hard to maintain. Is it discrimination you damn right, because these young black men are being held for what reason. Kids fight everyday at school and they don’t care about that. But since it was young black men fighting a white boy there acting like it’s the end of the world. Now if it was two black boys fighting eachother all they would do is get suppended. Now hanging nooses infront of the school what do you expect. It’s hard to walk away from something like that. Say if they did walk away and they went and reported that I bet you would see that white boy (Justin Barker) back in class the next day. They would all act like nothing even happened. But Mychal Bell and the other boys would have to live with that for the rest of there lives. Letting someone discriminate against them because there black. I’m a black women and I had white kids doing things to me when I was in school. I had this one white boy spit in my hair and his parents didn’t care. Was I mad hell yeah because I was hoping they would do something. Some of you may have kids and some don’t just imagine if your child came home and said mommy or daddy this white kid did this or did that. You would be very upset knowing that it’s your child. Mychal needs to tread cautiously and to not give anymore reason for trouble. The nooses were unacceptable but the beating as revenge was in no way justifiable. The whole town is at fault. They need to lay down some punishments that won’t ruin more lives but that will make some positive change. Btw people don’t get worked up over some joke comments on a black news site 😛.
