Erykah Badu and her daughter Puma

Erykah Badu Gives Birth to Daughter on Twitter: Mars is the Name

Erykah Badu gave birth to a baby girl, yesterday afternoon. She and Jay Electronica, the baby’s father, banged around ideas and (according to the folks at Giant magazine) decided her name will be Mars. The little girl in the picture up top would be Mars’ sister, Puma, and somewhere Seven is doing the kid thing. Erykah chose a natural child birth. She’s also been posting on Twitter as FATBELLYBELLA. When Mars came knocking, Jay Electronica gave a play-by-play, sort of publicly broadcasting the birth to the world.

Jay Electronica, all smiles about his new daughter

Now we have a planet, a sneaker, and a number. What’s next from this baby momma? Is it a TV? lol!!!

2 Minnie Brown Tue, Feb 03, 2009 - 7:39 pm

I wonder if they know about that company Merkaba and Mars.  If Mars Merkaba is the name, I wonder if it came from that place

3 Wow Fri, Feb 06, 2009 - 12:33 am

Somebody needs to stop her from having all these kids by different men. It is clear that she is a bad example to ALL young girls. Sometimes being smart is better than having tallent.

4 Grandmother Fri, Feb 06, 2009 - 1:23 am

Bad example my a$$!!! Anyone intimidating the life of a celebrity is dumb anyway. Live your OWN lives people!!! What’s good for one isn’t always good for someone else. Much love to this sistah. She’s happier and richer than most of these bammer a$$ bubbleheads on this messageboard! Knowledge of self is a beautiful thing.

5 Wow Fri, Feb 06, 2009 - 2:05 am

It takes a female to think that 3 children by 3 different men isn’t a bad example. But everyone tries to blame the black man for the struggles of our race. We aren’t the ones dropping these babies without caring who the father is. Erykah Badu is definitely a bad example for any young girl. It’s easy to say live your own life but the fact is children follow entertainers so she is a role model and a very bad one.

6 What's The Deal? Sat, Feb 07, 2009 - 10:32 am

I have no idea what she’s thinking having all these kids and by different men.  We know it’s not the money.  The men don’t seem to want her after she’s been with them and even after she gives birth to their kid, or do they even know that it’s their kid.  Oh well, Erykah has alwas been out there, so only she and the heavens above know what trip she’s on.

7 Asha Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 3:41 am

People who are making comments about Erykah having babies by different men, this is what i have to say to you: That is HER business, MIND YOURS. Its real easy for people to talk sh*t about people they dont even know and about the things in OTHER peoples lives they NEVER even experienced. Before you start judging other people, look at ya damn self!

8 Above Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 11:01 am

It may be her business but when you are in the public eye it becomes our business. Erykah should stop this mess and should not be given a free pass because she is a great artist. Some people need to be judged or they will routinely do the same shit over and over as Erykah is doing.

9 Stymuli Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 12:47 pm

Well, Mars isn’t so bad.

10 Stymuli Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 12:49 pm

The name wasn’t originally a planet’s name, but that of a Roman god. The most criticism you can really give her as far as the naming convention is concerned is that she named her daughter after a male Roman deity as opposed to a female one. But what are you going to do?

11 Above Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 12:56 pm

Really? Mars isn’t so bad? Neither is Pluto!

12 Mother Earth Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 8:05 pm

Fuck all yall hoes actually!!!!!

Peace out….

13 Stymuli Sun, Feb 08, 2009 - 10:34 pm

To “Above”:

You’re absolutely right! Pluto isn’t bad either. And I would remark that the entire population of Greece would agree with you!

Look, you’ve got to look at it in relative context. “Mars” is way more interesting and plausible than “Puma.” I would even go so far as to say it’s a world of difference! Pun intended.

14 Blambo Mon, Feb 09, 2009 - 12:35 am

Like the pun but all jokes aside meaning is way more important to these mothers than how their child will feel when they are verbally abused for these names. Mars is a planet to every child in the 3rd grade and that my friend is where the problems will start. No 3rd grader is looking for a meaning when they hear your name is Puma, Mars, or Seven. Love her music but as a mother this baby mamma disgust me.

15 zane Mon, Feb 09, 2009 - 9:02 pm

Half of americas young women are like that so what the differents.

16 1 up Mon, Feb 09, 2009 - 9:17 pm

There is no difference but just because half of Americas young women are like this it doesn’t make it right. Change is needed.

17 Stymuli Tue, Feb 10, 2009 - 12:21 am

Context. Context. Context. I can’t stress or emphasize it enough.

18 Blambo Tue, Feb 10, 2009 - 12:34 am

I agree with you about context but I can’t stress REALITY enough. Reality is that kids and some adults aren’t going to read up on a childs name. Knowing this parents should think before they name their children.

19 disgruntled_chica Thu, Feb 12, 2009 - 4:09 pm

Mars?

Figures…

I wish them well.

20 1 UP Sun, Feb 15, 2009 - 12:54 am

I feel you disgruntled_chica. I feel you. How dissapointing is Mrs. Badu with this mess.

21 Single Black Female Fri, Feb 20, 2009 - 12:46 am

As a single mother, not by choice as some of these women are, Erykah is a horrible example of what we really are. All of us aren’t having children by multiple men. All of us aren’t giving our children these names but this woman is what the media and the world sees. She should know better. When people say she is hurting us it’s true I have had to deal wit questions about her and women like her that are doing this to our race. She needs to stop.

22 mZ.BRoWN Sun, Feb 22, 2009 - 1:11 am

WUUT THE F*CK         MARZ   WOW!!!!!!!!

23 Jay Mon, Mar 02, 2009 - 12:40 am

This woman is holding black people back from getting ahead with the things she does. She truly is the picture of what all people think black people, especially black women, are. The sad part is there is really no stopping her.

24 ebony Tue, Jun 30, 2009 - 11:48 pm

i dont like the the name mars but i bet the bsby is cute. she should show a picture. puma is so cute

25 Iset Fri, Aug 21, 2009 - 3:28 pm

Look leave my girl Erykah alone. She can have as many babies as she wants.  It is her choice. It is her life, her journey on this earth. Here’s a little bit of history for ya. Back in 1840, nobody was trying to stop no black woman from having babies from whoever. It’s not a choice for myself but hey, I’m not in Ms Badu’s skin. Judge not least yea be judged.

26 Jay Sun, Nov 08, 2009 - 10:44 pm

She shouldn’t be left alone. She needs to know the example that she is setting for young girls. Back in 1840 nobody was trying to stop black women from having babies from whoever. Is that why black women think it’s the thing to do now?

27 Cherokee Moor Fri, Nov 20, 2009 - 11:29 pm

You people are to ignorant to understand the metaphysical meaning’s of her children’s names….anyway….CONGRATS ERYKAH!!!!!!!!

28 Ms. Nee-Nee Wed, Mar 03, 2010 - 11:45 pm

It is easier to see some one elese flaws before your own remember besides the fame and fortune she is a human, and A woman just like you and I! So all the negative comments need to stop she is an awesome artist and none you can take that from her . I am not saying that I agree or disagree with the childrens names or the different dads or what ever I have to get my shit right first and I am sure I am not the only one, Besides men have multiple children by multiple women all the time and they dont get bashed for it like us women . As long as she is a good mother and takes care of her kids then so what people try different relationship until they get it right and everyone comes into your life for a reason or a season these men served their purpose and now their season is up. Keep doing you Erykah! Much love mommy and God Bless!

29 sista Mon, Mar 22, 2010 - 11:48 pm

she is a jazibell…. andre 3000 wrote about it. and jay the last baby daddy is no longer with her either. i love the music…. pray to the ancestors she doesnt end up on the casino circuit… but ya’ll dont know this sista. negative and postive traites lay with in all of us…. and on the cool the sista reads a lot with out applying what she has learned. not just with the different daddies but in general. this sista is struggling within. trust

30 pride&Joy; Fri, Apr 02, 2010 - 12:18 am

People are so quick to judge, especially when they don’t know the situation. So what, she has 3 different baby’s fathers, the point is, she is taking care of her responsibilities and she was women enough not to abort any of her babies. If you don’t like the situation, get over it, because at the end of the day, she is still making money while you haters are on here gossiping about her. She should worry when yall stop talking about her because as of right now, you best believe she is taking that negative criticism and turning it into something postive. Good Bye Haters.

31 vernessie Sat, Apr 17, 2010 - 2:15 pm

To all you haters, Erykah Badu is a very powerful artist, just listen to her music, there is a message in every one. So what if she has three baby daddys, she is not the first and certainly not the last. KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DOING MS. BADU!!

32 loquaciousyouth Fri, Apr 23, 2010 - 7:10 pm

All of you people criticizing Erykah for having 3 kids with 3 different men should learn how to spell. That’s truly embarrassing.

And, it’s a double standard. Men do it all the time. One could easily argue she is empowering herself by propagating with different creative and powerful men. Stop holding yourselves down and back and stop blaming an artist for doing what she feels is right. Separate the art from the identity, live your own lives, and judge not lest ye be judged.

Paz…

33 Karen Wed, Jun 30, 2010 - 2:01 pm

Double standard is right..Donald Trump has kids by 3 different woman ( Ivana, Marla Maples & his current wife)& I’ve never even once heard ANYONE bring up anything like that bout him…

34 Keen-Queen Tue, Jul 20, 2010 - 8:47 am

Erykah has the right to live her life without the harsh judgements on her personal decisions. Did you forget this woman has children that can read? How could you sleep at night after talking about someone like this? She cares for the beautiful lives she has brought into this world and has brought powerful kings into her life, to father her children. No one on this planet can hold her against her actions. She is still a queen and her children are a wonderful manifestation of love that came together between two adults. You need to respect that people and practice a little peace and love and less judgement.

35 message to the haters Thu, Dec 15, 2011 - 2:07 pm

the majority of these comments im so sure have been posted by misogynistic ignorant men who would give a left lung to impregnate miss badu. please get a grip! lets take a look at the statistics concerning single parent homes. the women are the ones who stand strong. i commend miss badu for her constant evolution and consistency as an artist as a black woman and as a mother. would you have rather her abort her children. i bet that would give you guys something else to comment about. this makes me sick! and the issue with the name? would susan, jermaine, and jessica be better? i could go on and on, but i wont. please wake up people. at the end of the day your insults mean nothing to her and only verifies the fact that you all are unhappy with certain aspects of your own life! you dont even deserve her placenta to kiss!

36 Whoa Fri, Dec 30, 2011 - 2:59 pm

did she really birth on twit? so wrong

37 Metafly Sat, Mar 10, 2012 - 4:53 pm

Honestly.  She had the money to raise as many children as she wants to have.  The fathers of her children get along and is it really a bad example.  Money matters in the judgement.  So many white celebs do it and have been doing for quite a long time.  So what she named her children something you don’t like.  BAhahahahaaaaa! Really.  Stop being so judgmental and accept the fact that she has the means to make whatever reality she likes for her kids…sheesh folks.
