Halle Berry wins the Oscar for Best Actress

Halle Berry and Denzel Washington: Two Birds in One Night

Of course you’ve heard that Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won Oscars on Sunday night. Honestly I wasn’t surprised that Halle Berry won, there was so much talk about her role in Monsters Ball and zero about any of the other actresses in her category that it would have been beyond ridiculous not to give her the award. She was genuinely surprised too.. look at her in that picture.. instant tears and shit.. crying like a baby. That’s for real.. she was on stage sobbing so heavy I thought somebody was gonna have to go up and calm her down. That could get embarrassing you know, maybe a snot bubble was gonna pop out her nose, drooling.. something crazy.

Nah. I realize the importance of the moment. Halle approached her role in Monsters Ball seriously and to be recognized by winning the most prestigious award in the movie industry and being the first black woman to do so was a big deal.

She ran off a list of black actresses who were looked over in the past.. Dorothy Dandridge.. Lena Horne.. Diane Carroll.. and showed how real she is by giving thanks to Spike Lee for her first acting job in Jungle Fever.

Denzel Washington wins Oscar for Training Day

Then it was the category that I had personally been waiting for all night.. Best Actor.. I could imagine how the nominees felt because my heart was pounding like I was gonna have to walk on stage. I wanted Denzel to win it, but would that be too much to hope for? Two in one night.. actually three because Sidney Poitier was given an Honorary Oscar earlier in the night.

When Julia Roberts opened the envelope the look in her eyes said it all, Denzel got it and he stepped on stage with all of the dignity and pride of a man who knows that he’s talented, but was happy that he got validation of it from his peers. Training Day may not be an Academy Award type of movie.. it’s not like it was nominated for Best Film, but Denzel’s turn as a “bad guy” was so authentic and out of character for him that his performance was praised regardless of the quality of the film on a whole. I’m definitely gonna buy the DVD though. Anyway.. he has put in so many good performances that this was a chance for the Academy to ante up.

Denzel Washington's wife at the Academy Awards

And for all the black women that complain about black men running to white women when they get some money and fame.. that’s Denzel’s wife smiling over there. A beautiful woman.. plus he ended his speech by telling his kids that he was coming home to celebrate with them. Very nice.

Predictably, yesterday there was a lot of mud slinging from people who couldn’t believe that any of those awards were given to Halle, Denzel or Sidney Poitier. Mostly on talk radio. I don’t want to bring it down to the level of race, because that’s not where the line is drawn.. it’s inked on the faces of those who only seem to accept black people in the roles of stereotypes. Anything beyond laughing and joking, gun slinging, drugging and pimpin.. Oh god.. it’s a damn crime.. something must be wrong, check their histories EXTRA tight because these Negroes are out of hand. Yep. It’s a sad fact that no matter how fast the clock spins people remain ignorant.

On the other side of the coin.. why I say it’s not purely about race.. there are black people who don’t acknowledge it either.. “So what if they won, it don’t change my life.” These retards can’t find a sliver of appreciation for another person’s accomplishments. It’s all about them. The same people who you ask.. so what can you do?.. And they can’t come up with an answer, probably because their dreams have been stomped on and trampled like trash, so they shit on everybody who finds away to achieve their own.

I’m not gonna go on.. because people of that nature don’t deserve attention, let em stew like the crabs in the barrel that they are.. serve em up in a big basket at Red Lobster’s, buttered, steaming, mmmm mmm m good. That’s the fate of hate, a side dish on a great one’s plate.

Hi Chris,
I thought Halle speech was beautiful, it brought me to tears too. After Denzel won, and after I got through jumping up and down in the bed, I was so excited for all 3 of them I couldn’t go to sleep. Oh, I just love the fact that Denzel has a beautiful black wife. He isn’t distorted by that Hollywood image. He knows that he doesn’t need a white or light skinned women on his arm for America to except as a real man. He is just a real ass man. I admire him so much.

The best part of the evening for me was Denzel in the press room. Some dumb chick asked him what the smirk was for. Denzel shook her off by asking” I’m not supposed to be happy?” What he really wanted to say was maybe I should Buck Dance and smile fo ya. I also like his comment about 2 Birds in one night. He knows the underlying message of these awards: Get Off Our back. Though it was a Historic Night, when we start seeing Don Cheadle,
Jeffrey Wright, Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett receiving the same accolades, then it will seem as if we’ve achieved parity.
