Jay-Z Death of Auto-Tune: God has Spoken!

On my way out the door for an early hands-on of the Palm Pre, but a quick look at the ‘news’ and what’s this? In a pre-Blueprint 3 move, Jay-Z is ripping all the Auto-Tune rappers for sad sacking the music.
Nothing groundbreaking, more like it had to be said. Sorta like Moses with them Commandments. You know how Jay-Z shut down the basketball jersey craze by suggesting they were for kids, we’ll see if computer plugins are now substituted for 3hour/4x a week vocal lessons.

Jay-Z “Death of Auto-Tune”

I consider Kanye West the biggest offender of Auto-Tune. I have yet to buy 808s & Heartbreaks. Yes, I posted “Heartless” and the “Love Lockdown” video here, but I refuse to listen to Kanye sing, 12 tracks strong. He’s not a crooner - at all. Don’t fudge it.
“Death of Auto-Tune” should be a personal note to him, but for whatever odd/b.s. reason, Jay mentions him in the song..

“Ye told me to kill yall. To keep it 100!”

as if ‘little brother’ was against it the whole time.

I guess that’s a good thing, maybe we’ll get some listenable music out of Kanye on his next album, now that he’s been reprimanded. 😉

Ye the worst offender? Nah man, its Ron Browz all the way for me. Gotta say I kinda liked 808s, shit grows on you. And no, I don’t think the song’s gonna do any good. Fact a the matter is, Jay-Z just don’t have the authority he once had. Much like KRS, who also released an overtly anti-autotune song. Does anyone care? No? Kay, just checkin. Frankly, I feel that like so many so-called “fads”, the autotune will inevitably fade away on its own, but the process goes ever so slowly when ppl bitch about every 5 minutes.

2 Chris G. Sat, Jun 06, 2009 - 12:07 pm

Points made, but Kanye is the biggest offender simply because he actually has talent. And he didn’t make one or two songs for fun like say, Jamie Foxx. Kanye went all in. Can’t judge the album, maybe it does grow on you - but I can’t take any prolonged exposure to the Tune to find out. Death of..

Jay-Z - Death Of Autotune (prod. Kanye West & No I.D.)

4 Chris G. Sat, Jun 06, 2009 - 5:48 pm

So Kanye co-produced it + released a new Tuned video last week? That’s hypocrisy x 10. Seems like if you are one of the leaders of the trend, you can’t also be on the other end saying it sucks. Not minus a throwing up of the hands, claiming there are too many followers - I’m off to new things.

Someone needs to ask dude where he stands.

5 danzenie Sat, Jun 06, 2009 - 11:31 pm

‘Ye is confused with confusion.  Many people out there wont dis Ye simply because of his association with Jay.  The others have clouded thoughts based on economics.  Jay is in it to win it.  He’s no longer just a rapper, which is good.

6 Tone Sun, Jun 07, 2009 - 12:33 am

Ye’ is a hot mess that has gotten away with the crap that he does because nobody will stand up to his crazy ass. But Jay-Z is correct. Do away with this tallentless mess that is called 808. Either be a rapper or a singer f**k that in between shit.

7 Jerome Sun, Jun 07, 2009 - 9:28 am

lol. And just when did Kanye become knighted as the leader of the auto-tune? Don’t care if he made five auto-tune albums, he still just another follower. Course its not like jumped on the track & spat verses decrying the auto-tune or some shit, he just co-produced the song. He’s playing the role of the archtypical neutral producer: you don’t get involved in what’s bein thrown down, you just make the beat, even if its goes directly against your views. You know how that goes.

But who says you can’t do both? If so, you might wanna pass the memo onto Andre 3K, Natt Dogg, Queen Latifa, Cee-lo, Akon, Kid Cudi, Nelly, Estelle & about a million other mofos. 😛

8 skosha Sun, Jun 07, 2009 - 12:50 pm

theres nothing wrong with rapping, singing and dancing or even painting pictures because it’s called art and somewhere down the line people forgot that. personally i rap i produce music but always wanted to be a singer and auto tune shore helps that dream come true (lol) so people need to stop crying about auto tune because it’s a phase in hip hop right now, and technically it follows the same family as what zapp and roger did with a new generation twist….

MY OPINION

9 Music sucks now Sun, Jun 07, 2009 - 8:02 pm

Sorry to inform you but this 808 crap in no way follows Roger and Zapp. Zapp and Roger played instruments that talked. This 808 mess is people putting their talentless voices on what ever it is to make them sound that way and calling it music. Where in the world has talent gone these days? Kanye can’t sing for shit, Soulja Boy can’t rap for shit but people continue to by their mess. Soulja Boy has that Swag on hit, oops I mean shit, that doesn’t contain on rap lyric in it. He actually talked his way to a hit and nobody even noticed it. How sad is that?

10 skosha Sun, Jun 07, 2009 - 9:26 pm

First of all didn’t say it was the same as zapp and roger i said it’s the same idea jus new technology but people keep talking about talentless whoi cares if you dont like it dont listen because i dont listen to most of that myself but im not gonna sit here and talk about people being talentless but if it works for u then keep on keepin on lol

MY OPINION

11 Music sucks now Sun, Jun 07, 2009 - 9:38 pm

People keep on talking about talentless because there was a day when you had to have talent to be a singer but all that is being cheapened with technology. It used to mean something to be a millionaire for your singing talent but these days anyone with a connection to the music world can be one. All I am saying is music clearly isn’t what it used to be. If Soulja Boy can have a number 1 hit music sucks.

12 MsMoni Mon, Jun 08, 2009 - 2:21 am

I think I have to agree with Music sucks now.  Back in the day people in the music industry could actually sing.  They had actual talent.  Now and days all you have to do is be attractive, know someone and you’re a star.  I wish there was a record company out there willing to let real musicians make music instead of getting behind mediocre “talent” just to make a few bucks.

13 Shania Mon, Jun 08, 2009 - 9:50 am

The thing is, Ye didn’t make 808s to display his singing talent. He said himself, he’s not tryna be R Kelly or Usher or some ish. He simply felt that the subject matter he was tryin put out with the album couldn’t be expressed through rapping. And he’s right, there are some things you can and can’t accomplish with rapping and some things you can and can’t accomplish with singing. And if you took the time to listen to the album, and I mean really really listen to it, you may notice that unlike someone like say Mike Jones or even T-Pain himself, Kanye used the autotune quite conceptually.

There’s an old sayin on how u can’t truly comment on something unless you first fall in love wit it, but I forget how it goes. Sides, I didn’t like 808s THAT much. lol

Oh and for the record, I once saw Kanye sing live way back in 06. He wasn’t no Teddy Pendergrass but in all honesty, he could sing, very well. I don’t what happened.

14 skosha Mon, Jun 08, 2009 - 1:13 pm

People need to stop talking about back in the day because thats past tense. because i’m shore that back in the day a bag of chips cost 25 cents, back in the day presidents were all white, back in the day gas was 26 cents a gallon get my drift. but i just want to make it clear that some things u say are true but theres people that take what they got and make it work. but the music business is all about who you know not wat they know. and it is sad when comparing to BACK IN THE DAY lol when it was as you say all about wat u know…....

15 Music sucks now Mon, Jun 08, 2009 - 4:39 pm

I talk about “back in the day” because artist these days NEED to look back and see what talent really is. I understand that things change but most of the time it is for the better not for the worse as music has done. These people aren’t taking what they do and making it work. What it really is is that the fans are excepting anything that people singers and rappers put out as music. Bottom line is the so-called artist get paid for doing what ever it is they do so they might as well keep on doing it.

16 Angie Mon, Jun 08, 2009 - 6:51 pm

I just needed to throw my 2 cents in. True music has gotten worse and I think people need to have their head examined if they call what’s on the radio art…cuz it is not art, call it what it is: trash. I digress, however I think that we need to have a realization and the industry really needs to accept responsibility for the production of this so called “art” otherwise known as music. Music has become more and more violent, misogenistic, and homophobic not to mention the creation of music technology like the 808 beatmaker, the synthisizer, and the autotune have made it easier to make music sound good.

17 Music sucks now Mon, Jun 08, 2009 - 7:03 pm

Angie, I agree with 90% of what you said but music is made for one reason only, and that is to make money. People keep buying this trash so the industry is going to keep making their money off this trash.

18 Angie Tue, Jun 09, 2009 - 1:06 am

I agree music is made to make money but we all know that the buyer of this so called “music” s not the same race or color as the artist…after 7k copies…it’s all blanco! So the blame really isn’t on us as a people…

19 MSN Tue, Jun 09, 2009 - 4:27 pm

Yes Angie, the blame is on us. If we don’t buy it, they have to go in a different direction so we will buy it. They would have to start making better songs…

20 danzenie Tue, Jun 09, 2009 - 4:54 pm

Blame goD

21 angie Tue, Jun 09, 2009 - 10:01 pm

Freedom of choice is an illusion no one has as much freedom to choose as they think they do. you have the freedom to select from predesignated options.

22 MSN Tue, Jun 09, 2009 - 10:12 pm

In some parts of life that statement is true, however, it doesn’t apply in music. You can like and buy what ever you like. There’s no predesignation there.

23 Angie Wed, Jun 10, 2009 - 5:39 pm

But that just proves my point…Minorities don’t play a significant portion in the sales in the music industry…we only count for the first 7k dollars in sales. All the other sales belong to white people. So when a record is going double and triple platinum…it’s not cuz day-day and ki-ki bought the album. It’s cuz David and Kelly from whitesville USA wanted a copy of that “nigga shit”. Keep it Real…

And you’re right you can like and buy whatever you like(but to further prove my point) you only have as much freedom in that avenue as there are options…

24 angie Wed, Jun 10, 2009 - 5:41 pm

First 7 thousand copies…not dollars. My mistake, and that’s an approximation by this time it could be significantly lower…

25 MSN Wed, Jun 10, 2009 - 6:54 pm

Angie, I am not saying that black people are the problem I am saying we, as fans, need to stop buying this mess. It’s not a race thing, it’s a fans like anything these days thing.
