Rihanna Live Earth Press Conference

Rihanna Judging Current TV’s 60 Seconds To Save the Earth Contest

Looks like Rihanna’s Live Earth performance wasn’t a one shot let’s get this free publicity move. She’s part of Current TV’s Ecospot 20 member celebrity judge panel.

The contest also dubbed “:60 Seconds to Save the Earth,” asks participants to get their video skills up, making :15, :30, or :60 second spots showing what they are doing to help climate change.

The grand prize winner gets a Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

Toyota Highlander

Winners from the UK or Ireland.. you get the less-mighty Prius. Definite chick car.

Not a driver, there are lower level prizes like 46’ HD TV’s and Sidekicks.

Check Current TV’s contest site for the nit grit details.

Maybe I can come up with something for these light bulbs I bought the day after Live Earth.

fluorescent light bulbs

“Sucker!” Not really. A 100 watt light bulb uses.. 100 watts.

These have the same brightness as 100 watt bulbs but they use.. 23 watts.

Math for dummies - You pay a dollar. I pay 25 cents.

I’m not gonna bullshit you, that cost benefit was the main reason I made the move.

Exactly how using less electricity stops Hurricane Shaniqua from wiping out Miami or how it’ll help keep the North Pole icey is a mystery to me. But easing our share of the power grid was one of the simple things listed during Live Earth that we could do to help.

Wanting to do more than talk I made the switch.

There is real science behind it though. When I get the time I’ll flip through this to really get it.

I think it was Cameron Diaz who said one person seems like nothing but multiply it by a million people making that same change and then we’re getting somewhere.

Like voting. The numbers add up.

So I bought a few light bulbs.

If you do the same, know this, because fluorescent bulbs use mercury to create light, they have different disposal requirements. You’re not supposed to throw them in the regular trash. They need to be recycled.

I’m thinking when that time comes I’ll just stuff them in the Sanitation man’s pocket.

They also have a different kind of brightness, something to do with the color spectrum being different. You may not even notice it, but it was enough that I didn’t switch over completely: bathroom, hallway, two lamps, but the top light in my living room needs that old school glow.

That said, turns out the brand I picked up N:Vision is one of the best. A Home Depot lucky selection. If the earth doesn’t thank me, I’ll thank N:Vision when the Con Ed billl comes in.

Hmm.. 30 second video for the hybrid.
