The Truth with Jeff Johnson: BET is Back in the News Biz

BET is back in the news business: This Friday at 11 The Truth with Jeff Johnson will be on the air. BET has long since shook loose all responsibility to cover news and community-like shows (shout out to Tavis Smiley and Ed Gordon - I see you Ananda Lewis); so it’s hard to say what motivated this change of heart. A good guess would be the Hip-Hop vs. America shows, which were hosted by Jeff Johnson, had a lot do with it.

Jeff Johnson or “Cousin Jeff”, as Rap City viewers know him, is a graduate of the University of Toledo and former director of the NAACP’s Youth and College division. He was also Vice-President for the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network. On the show he will speak to newsmakers and personalities and touch on political issues and current events as they affect the BET audience.

Which is really an extension of those Hip-Hop vs. America panels, flipped to the ‘story of the day.’

How long will this move in the news you can use direction last?
The show is slotted at least until the Democratic National Convention.

This has the potential to be something good. I just hope that BET goes all the way with it by providing integrity, real journalism and being informative with less emphasis on shallow entertainment news.

If he wants to be respected in the news world he should get rid of the braids.

I’m so over BET.  I have TVone now and I like it waaay better! Its what BET used to be. Somewhere along the line BET sold their soul.  But it is what it is. Atleast now we have a choice!
