Big Gen and Snipe - This Christmas

The Five Spot: “This Christmas” the Big Gen & Snipe Way

I used to play Death Row’s Christmas album repeatedly on baby Jesus and the jolly fat man’s big day. This is when Death Row was Death Row; along with Profile’s compilation Christmas Rap featuring Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” and Sweet Tee’s “Let The Jingle Bells Rock”, it remains one of the few holiday rap albums in my collection.

Walk into any Virgin Megastore today, there are shelves of Christmas repackaged goodies in every genre. Not sure how many listenable hip-hop albums are in the mix, but anyone putting together a last minute holiday compilation would do themselves no harm putting this song on the tracklist. It’s a version of “This Christmas” from a group called Big Gen & Snipe feat. (but not pictured) Birmingham J. and Mista Mal.

Let it roll past the first verse, it’s lively, and manages to have a holiday spirit vibe without succumbing to Hallmark card verses or ruining it by slipping into gun talk. Lots of stacks and gleaming, but if you’re anywhere north of 16 isn’t Christmas all about shopping? If I was the God of the radio programming universe it would be on every hip-hop radio station’s playlist.

If you like it, go ahead and download it courtesy of Big Gen & Snipe.
