Zoe Saldana To Play Lieutenant Uhura In The Next Star Trek

Last mentioned around these parts regarding her birthday festivities in Las Vegas, Zoe Saldana has also been busy on her day job. She recently finished up work in “Vantage Point” (It’s about the assassination of the president) and is currently on the set of James Cameron’s sci-fi flick “Avatar.” It looks like Zoe Saldana will keep her head above the clouds for her next role when she tackles the part of Lieutenant Uhura in the next Star Trek movie, the 11th in the series.

Uhura, commonly known as the black chick in the original Star Trek, was the chief communications officer, so there will be lots of spinning around from a control board, one hand on her earpiece, ‘Captain.. we have something here!’

Of course Uhura was also known for her mini-skirt action. If not Zoe’s acting, how she looks in that skirt is oh so important.

Uhura was originally played by Nichelle Nichols.

It was the late 60’s when Star Trek first aired. She was so fine and captivating men are still bowing down.

Watch out. Classic material below.

Zoe’s got big shoes to fill. 😊

Do black women have to be half white to get sexy rolls? How insulting. She ain’t Uhura.

Nichelle Nichols is the only Uhura for me.
The 1960s Uhura is one of the goddesses of Sci-Fi.

Zoe has a long way to go in matching that!

I love Zoe but she’s not thick enough. That role should have gone to a sister anyway.

OPED, UNFORTUNATELY THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS YES, THEY DO HAVE TO BE HALF WHITE. SHE AIN’T NO UHURA, YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THAT.

This is because whites still control the images we see in popular media.
I’m sure there were a bevy of black actresses to choose form, but white casting directors inject their own personal qualms and tastes when choosing an actress. One who better represents their own unique sense of aesthetics; so what we get is a lighter- “thinner” version of a black woman far removed from our cultural norms.

White men/boys will salivate over her skinny form and her light complexion, but blacks like me will lament over the choice. Upon hearing our complaints young white men will wax angry and tell us to get over it. What they miss is that white privilege enables the ruling culture to co-opt the black woman and remake her in their image; not ours. An image of us that’s comfortable to young whites; while taking a dismissive attitude towards anyone who dissents from this view. This is a subtle form of racism/power that Obama’s election can never address.

When I think of Uhura in that short skirt- with those big thighs (she was a dancer) and her dark Nubian skin, I’m just put off by this new interpretation. The cameramen had to be judicious in how they shot her because her big legs kept creepin into frame; and when she sat down her skirt would rise to the occasion. Quite provocative for 60’s standards; especially when the prevailing standard was for skinny, white- and blond.

Michael Gibson, what can I say besides you are 100% correct in your statement. I will say this though, how many of our women are adding hair to their heads putting in contacts and going with this flow though. Too me there is nothing sexier than a truly REAL black woman.
