The Game - The Documentary
 (Aftermath Records)

- reviewed by Brett Kuehn

The Game...The Documentary....Classic?...Well maybe but let you be the judge of that. The Game certainly thinks so, like on the track “The Documentary”, he compares his album to being up there with albums such as Ready to Die, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Chronic, Doggy Style and All Eyes on Me, those are some pretty high predictions. But The Game does bring you some hard hitting West Coast gangsta music that puts Compton back on the map. He’ll definitely be around for a while in the rap game. This is an album that won’t be overlooked by any hip-hop music heads.

From him touching subjects of his son’s birth, getting shot, gang banging, signing with Aftermath Records, to tracks that show a sensitive side about him with females.

A track that wishes he could go back in time called “Start From Scratch” is a very deep and personal track. The crazy thing is he recorded this track drunk in the studio. He tells you how get got shot, and tells outcomes of other people lives he wish he could change. You can definitely tell by the sound of his voice in this track that he definitely wishes he could change things in his past. more..

Kanye West produced the track called “Dreams”which would put motivation in anyone. “Put you on the Game” isn’t really anything new, but you put his voice and a Timbaland beat on it and it’s one of those hard hitting tracks that’s played with heavy bass. “Hate it or Love It” is one of those tracks that you hear once and you got the beat in your head all day and really can’t wait to hear it again. It’s featuring 50 Cent and basically just saying haters get off my sh*t, I ain’t going nowhere.

Notable tracks are "How We Do", a club classic everywhere. “We Aint” featuring and produced by Eminem is another bragging track but the beat is raw and Eminem just rips it. “Special” and “Don’t Worry” are for the ladies and show his sensitive side. "Like Father, Like Son" is a very personal track that talks of his son’s birth and how he wants his son to be successful like him but not his lifestyle.

So for The Game he definitely puts out some good material and has the top producers on his album. His lyrics are very real it’s like when you hear what he’s talking about you don’t doubt anything, he’s pure west coast gangsta with a twist, "I spit for the niggas doing 25 on they fifth year, ready to throw a nigga off the fifth tier/ For the white boys in the Abercrombie & Fitch, yeeah/ And every nigga who helped me to get here."

The other twist is he doesn’t sound like a West Coast rapper which definitely invites everyone to listen to him from east coast to west coast. He definitely brings Compton out of their coma with his hard hitting beats and lyrics that smack you in the face and say possible legend.

The Industry Says

Pitchfork Media - 8.3 "The Documentary is the best West Coast street-rap album since DJ Quik's 2002 LP Under tha Influence.. the impeccable beats and The Game's authoritative gruffness carry him through the album; he never sounds like anything less than a star on the rise."

411Mania.com - "Game is one of the least creative rappers out there, alongside his G-Unit cronies. Mainstream rap fans may accept half-hearted lyricism paired with tight beats and catchy hooks, but it’s not going to fly with real hip-hop heads. This is album is heavy on great beats and hooks though.. “No More Fun and Games”, an amazing pimped out, funky beats with a 70’s feel to it is wasted with Game’s lax wordplay. By the time Eminem shows up on the 16th track to rap and produce on “We Ain’t” and absolutely blows Game out of the water, it becomes apparent this Game still has a few bugs in it."

allmusic.com - "This is hardly another Guerilla Black, an MC lacking originality. The Game's scope is obviously much wider, and he's no mimic; though he's still finding his feet as a lyricist, isn't as distinct vocally as 50 or Lloyd Banks, and nearly allows the gimmicks to overwhelm the skills, The Documentary is an excellent debut that also hints at a lot of potential.. The most remarkable aspect of the Game is how he can be such a blatant product of gangsta rap (okay, let's say fanboy) and leave a mark so fast."
