Beyonce vs. Jennifer Hudson: There’s No Competition

I’m sure by now you’ve heard that Jennifer Hudson, former American Idol contestant and castoff, stole the Dreamgirls shine from Beyonce. Beyonce was nominated for a Golden Globe this morning for best-actress, Jennifer Hudson got a supporting actress nod, but word is Jennifer Hudson is also on the fast-track for that highly coveted Oscar.

Jeffrey Seller producer of the Broadway musicals “Rent” and the recent “High Fidelity,” compared her to past Dreamgirl, Jennifer Holliday..

“Jennifer Holliday’s performance is iconic,” says Jeffrey Seller. “It’s one of the great all-time performances from the Broadway stage; it is up there with Ethel Merman, and yet what Jennifer Hudson does is she brings simplicity and youthful honesty to it.”

I’m pretty sure when Beyonce was cast for the film it was expected that she would put people in seats, but these accolades directed toward a newcomer couldn’t have been on the board. Rumors of jealousy have run rampant, so Beyonce cleared things up..

“I didn’t have the part with the most drama, I was fine with that,” Knowles clarified. “I’m not doing this to become a star or prove that I can sing. I’ve already won nine Grammys and everyone knows that I can sing. I did this mainly to know I can act, to know myself and show everyone else that I could. I’m extremely happy with the movie. I’m extremely proud of Jennifer. I think she’s incredible. It’s so unfortunate that once again the media is starting things with women. ... You hear I’m mad. Why would I be mad? I’m a part of an Oscar-buzz-[worthy] movie.”

“Why would I be mad at Jennifer?” she continued.

“I can only imagine the pressure she had being a woman that’s never had an album, never done a movie.”

“When I told people I’m doing ‘Dreamgirls,’ they were like, ‘That’s good. Who’s doing Effie? Is she singing “And I Am Telling You [I’m Not Going]” right?’ ... That [song] is what the [production] is famous for, [and] she pulled it off. She’s sweet, she’s incredible and I hope she maintains that same sweetness. ... She’s gifted, and I hope she maintains that.”

Jennifer Hudson commented on the situation too.

“It is a surprise,” Hudson said of the ballyhoo over the alleged quarrelling, “because [BeyoncAc] is a sweet girl and we’ve always got along. It’s like, ‘Where did this come from?’ Any time when something is going good, somebody is gonna find anything to turn from a molehill and make a mountain out of it. But BeyoncAc and I support each other the same as we did when we first started. That’s my ‘Dream’ sister. There’s nothing but love for each other.”

Beef squashed? We’ll see who shows up for the after Oscar party.

I am a huge fan of JENNIFER HUDSON’S AND I ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE HER RISE! FINALLY SHE GETS THAT CHANCE AND SHE RUNS WITH IT. SHE NOT ONLY WAS EFFIE HER GOD GIVEN VOICE COULD NOT BE MATCHED!
Bouncey IS JEALOUS AND SPOILED AND MAD AT JENNIFER HUDSON AND IT SHOWED ON OPRAH AND IT SHOWED IN ALL THE OTHER PHOTOS TOO. She finally met her match…well JENNIFER HUDSON HAS 6 OCTAVE RANGE While bouncey only has 2-3 octaves that sound very watered down on all her solo albums. I never bought them after DC.
bouncey is too commercial for my taste.
JENNIFER THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING FOR YOU BABY!!!! NEW YORK LOVES JENNIFER HUDSON!!!!!!!!!!OXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

2 anonymous Sun, Dec 17, 2006 - 5:03 pm

but what about the part where Beyonce said that she wishes she could have gained twenty pounds to play Jennifer Hudsons part? or was that from another interview

3 babyGCanada Mon, Dec 18, 2006 - 2:26 pm

@REALITY… you sound like a groupie or something… Jennifer can sing. Beyonce can sing.. no need to attack anybody. The issue at hand is ARE they trying to sabotage her or steal her shine.. I think Beyonce did a good job on her song as did anika and jen.. she’s talented even jen can’t take that away from her.. but the way they try to hold her back is why we love to hate the knowles cammp they still think they have to push beyonce.. she’s already the biggest star out there… if Jen achieved half of what beyonce had she’d be a HUGE success… sometimes the knowles camp just get overzealous that’s all…

and I’m not a huge Beyonce fan.. just giving reality a reality check..

Beyonce: millions sold, endorsements, 10+ top 10 singles and #1 on the charts as we type, money out the a$$, in fact she’s making money off this movie for years to come because she’s part of the soundtrack production or whatever ( check the audio ) she probably has businesses, fragrance.. the list goes on and on and on.. she’s been doing this for what 10 years?? She’s a veteran don’t get it twisted.. which is all the more reason they should take it easy on Jen as she’s just coming in they don’t have to sweat her about signing with papa knowles.

on a side note: what manager in their right mind isn’t trying to sign Jen right now anyway?

I’m so very proud of Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson—-in fact, the entire ensemble is a star-studded cast and they all should feel very blessed to be a part of such a huge film!  Though I agree that Jennifer Hudson may not (already) have the accolades and or opportunities Beyonce has garnered in her musical and acting career, after I saw the cast on the Oprah Winfrey show, I too, noticed an (almost) uneasiness on Beyonce’s face when Hudson was introduced to the audience.  My sister and I were watching together and it was a simultaneous reaction.  Beyonce, in my view “pretends” to be humble, but I don’t truly believe she embodies this virtue.  Vocally, I do believe Hudson is quite comparable to Jennifer Holiday and though I won’t say who’s a better singer between she and Beyonce, I will agree they are both mind-blowing vocalists.  In my view upon reading this article, Beyonce basically told on herself by starting her statement with “I didn’t have the part with the most drama…I’m fine with that…I’m not doing this to prove I can sing…I’ve won nine Grammys so everyone knows I can sing…”  If there’s no animosity involved, why would a person even have to go to this extreme to bring clarity to the situation?  True enough, both the film adaptation and Broadway version of this musical is centered around Effie’s character and let’s face it…  Beyonce is used to being the center of attention.  Her name may head the bill, but Hudson has inarguably received the most buzz since it was announced the film was being made.  Should there be controversy?  Of course not!  I’m rooting for them both to receive high praise for their roles and the cast as a whole, but where this issue lies, I still believe Beyonce doesn’t want to remain in any shadow but her own.

5 vchocolate Tue, Dec 26, 2006 - 2:33 am

I am a Beyonce fan, but Jennifer stole the show. Period. Jennifer should be the one getting the best actress nod, not the best supporting nod. Beyonce did better in this movie than she has in any of her other films, but it is still not good enough to be put in the same category as Angela Basset’s What’s love got to do with it and Halle Berry’s Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (who , by the way, both won in the best actress category at the golden globes). To nominate Beyonce would be an insult to hard working and truly talented black actresses everywhere who, unfortunately, get overlooked every year, because they don’t have as big a name or don’t appeal as much to the white mainstream audience. It’s not right, and as much as I love Beyonce’s music, I don’t think people should pump her up more than she should be. In reality, she is a beautiful woman, a great singer, and an ok actress.

6 Sweets Wed, Dec 27, 2006 - 10:17 pm

Although I have always been a Beyonce fan, I must say that Jennifer Hudson stole the show. I have been following her since American Idol. I was very disappointed and baffled when she was voted off the show. I thought, “How could they let someone this good get overlooked?” But, I always knew that Jennifer would do great things. I knew American Idol wasn’t it for her. Let’s face it…she has it! I have love for both of them, but let’s give credit where credit is due—Jennfier Hudson deserves the award. Beyond being the best “supporting actress,”(which, in my opinion, is not good enough)she was the BEST LEADING ACTRESS. I don’t understand why Beyonce has that title. BEYONCE SHOULD BE NOMINATED FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, AND JENNIFER SHOULD BE NOMINATED FOR BEST LEADING ACTRESS. After seeing the movie, all I could think about was Jennifer Hudson.
I was so inspired by her brilliant performace. She is in another league, at another level—she is a powerhouse singer, who brings emotion out of every song, brings people to tears, and will bring you to your feet. I am a singer, who considers myself to be very well musically trained. I know incredible musical talent when I hear it. Beyonce is a great singer/actress, and a wonderful entertainer. But Jennifer is the better vocalist and actress in this performance. Beyonce is great at a lot of things, but let’s face it…you can’t be the best at everything. Sooner or later someone else will come along, who is better than you in a particular area. No-one is the best in all things. But, overall, I am definitely inspired by them both.

7 Phila Fri, Dec 29, 2006 - 3:01 pm

Beyonce can’t act. If shes gettin nominated for an award it must’ve been a slow year for actresses.

8 Michelle Mon, Jan 01, 2007 - 6:38 pm

The movie was great. But, as an accomplished musician and a person with an undergraduate and graduate degree in music, I must say that Jennifer is the better singer. Period.  Her voice has more depth and more range than Beyonce’s.  Beyonce’s voice is very commercial and she covers it up with dazzling dance moves and skimpy outfits, while Jennifer’s voice has a raw quality that distinguishes it from all other singers.

9 quez Wed, Jan 03, 2007 - 6:01 pm

LETS SET IT STR8…1.BEYONCE HAD TO TUNE DOWN HER VOICE(OBVIOUSLY SO THE OTHERS CAN HAVE A LITTLE SHINE.2.EXACTLY WHAT BEYONCE SAID.ITS NOT HARD TO BE A DAMN DRAMA QUEEN_JENNIFER ROLE_.AND THIS IS INSULTING BEYONCE COMPARING HER TO JENNIFER HUDSON.(NEWCOMMER).JENNIFER HUDSON DID KILL THAT SONG THO..BUT ITS A MOVIE..(NOT LIVE AT ALL)U CAN MAKE ANYBODY SOUND GOOD IN A MOVIE.IT ALL COMES DOWN TO SINGING LIVE.AND YALL NO BEYONCE CAN SING LIVE VERY VERY WELL(EXCELLENT)PEOPLE JUST HATING ON BEYONCE CAUSE SHE THE BEST SINGER ON THE PLANET RIGHT NOW BEAUTIFUL OFCOURSE SO PEOPLE JUSS WANT HER OFF THE MAP..BUT I BET DEM SAME BITCHEZZ GOT BOTH OF HER CD’S..

10 denise curry Thu, Jan 04, 2007 - 4:29 pm

I have seen Bey’s movies, she needs some speech lessons, sounds to country, her singing is cool, but take away the skimpy outfits and JayZ what do you have “RING THE ALARM”——- LoL

11 singer Sat, Jan 06, 2007 - 5:33 pm

i think beyonce is cool but she sorta killed the movie for me. i didn’t see Deena, her character. i saw Beyonce and it was hard to be into the movie because it’s hard to believe her. they portrayed her as too nice that it seemed too fake, i mean she stole her friend’s man people!!! if it weren’t for jennifer hudson, i would’ve been very dissappointed—but i wasn’t satisfied with the movie-the director could’ve changed it a bit and showed everyone’s good and bad sides

12 JadasFedUp Mon, Jan 08, 2007 - 4:02 pm

Quez:
what?
Jennifer Hudson sounds great live.  Always has (Helllloo American Idol)  Besides do u Remember what Beyonce sounded like when she first came out? She’s come a loooooooong way.  Vocal lessons can be thanked for that. Jennifer’s a natural. Newcomer or not. She’s given Bee a run for her money.  Never attempt to partcipate in a live debate!!

13 Me Wed, Jan 10, 2007 - 3:32 pm

I am tired of this stupidity I think that people should stop instigating issues because Beyonce as well as Jennifer Hudson did a wonderful job this was Jennifer Hudson’s time to shine to show her beautiful talent and she nailed it. Beyonce has already proved her talent of singing and she did a good job on the movie as well.

14 billman Thu, Jan 11, 2007 - 3:17 pm

Beyonce can say she don’t feel bad that Jennifer Hudson is getting all the Praise I am just not buying it I KNOW SHE IS MAD. THE GIRL SAID SHE WISH SHE HAD PUT ON 20 POUNDS TO PLAY JENNIFER’S ROLE WHAT THAT TELL YOU SHE HAS GOT TO BE ON TOP SHE DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE NOT TO BE. Now that Jennifer took the show from her she trying to act like she don’t care.STOP THAT BEE!!!!!!!

15 kimchi Sat, Jan 13, 2007 - 6:17 pm

Jennifer Hudson should be getting the BEST ACTRESS NOMINATION AND AWARD. What the hell didn’t she do to not deserve that besides getting the last billing. Thats complete BS for just giving her the best supporting actress nomination. All those award and industry people can kiss my ass.  She sung half the songs so how was her part supporting?  Everybody knows Hudson’s going to win and deserves all the awards and accolades she gets.  It seems like life is imitating the movies.  There putting the less talented Beyonce (who had a descent performance) like her character “Deena” in front and screwing Hudson’s “Effie” as the backburner. Just for the record it doesn’t matter how talented anyone is outside of the film, we’re talking about in the film. Just one of Hudson’s singing performance was better then any or all of Beyonce’s performance put together in the film.  It was better then anyones.

16 Miesha S. Tue, Jan 16, 2007 - 10:39 am

I think dream girls was great!!! I didn’t even look at the movie as in who was the best performer, when I seen dream Girls I just seen it as a movie with two beautiful black women. I heard this thing about this beef that beyonce had against Jennifer, but the second i heard it I knew it wasn’t true. Ms Beyonce and Ms. Jennifer Keep going further and ignore all them hater out there!!!
One Love!!!!!!!!!!!!

17 Miesha S Tue, Jan 16, 2007 - 10:41 am

Happy birthday Aliyah! I haven’t forgot about you. R.I.P baby girl.

18 toodvius4u Wed, Jan 17, 2007 - 1:49 pm

I am not surprised that society, the very society we live in, would behave in such an insensitive manner. DreamGirls is an extraordinary movie that captures the pain, success, love, dedication, and devotion that each artist was faced with. The unique ensemble should all be rewarded for such an amazing job. Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce Knowles, along with the rest of the all star cast, captivated the audience and succeeded in bringing forth an excellent film. I would like to extend my thank yous to all who made this film possible. DreamGirls, by far, is one of the best movies I had the pleasure of enjoying!

19 ms toni Thu, Jan 18, 2007 - 4:25 am

The movie was a MOVIE, not a showcase of who’s better. I am from Chicago and I’ll always be for anybody from here, but I am also partial to fairness. Before Jennifer came on the scene, we all noticed how great a vocalist Beyonce was, with range and control ( YES, her number one fan is talking) {Dangerously in Love, Listen}. Part of the reason JH got the boot on AI becase she had range, but lacked control; now after some training and maturity, she’s got it. But that’s not the point, ppl have treated this movie like it was real life. Beyonce was told to hold back on the singing, and no one noticed how well she nailed Diana ross with her gestures, dancing, and all. I agree that the script seemed a little watered down, deena was probably more devious- being that she stole her girls man, but they wanted to keep it pg13. Jennifer had the more controversial, striking role like Beyonce said, it was a completely different character, who’s purpose was to be the lovable antagonist. I dont understand how Beyonce got the Best actress nom, because it really did revolve around JH.  PPl paid so much attention to Jen’s singing, they didnt notice at times her dialog came off a little aakward. I saw the movie that many times to notice. Yes, I think Beyonce was a little stumped to not get the attention she expected, and to see Jen get most of it. They brought 2 different elements to the movie, one was meant to be more noticeable- check out the original Dreamgirls.

20 Lana Fri, Jan 19, 2007 - 4:10 am

I totally agree! Both women did a beautiful job in the movie. Both have beautiful voices.

21 Bianca Fri, Jan 19, 2007 - 10:59 pm

I am soooooooooooo proud of Jennifer Hudson she has overcome alot of obstacles to get to where she is. the girl is BLESSED!!! and there should be no competition Beyonce has always been in the spotlight lets allow someone with just as much talent shine!!!
I for one think Jennifer is a beatuiful and positive role model to young african american girls and I hope she does get an oscar she deserves it!!!!!!!!

22 Dee Sat, Jan 20, 2007 - 2:17 pm

So what Jennifer can sing, Beyonce screams when she attempts to sing. Stars need to realise that they are not going to be young forever and have the spotlight and Beyonce is aware of this. Hollywood is fed up of the same faces over and over, they want fresh blood. Beyonce is talented but there was a time when she sang quality songs now its just quantity.

23 Star Sat, Jan 27, 2007 - 12:20 pm

Beyonce is my girl, but I have to say her acting lacked depth. She blew the one moment when her character should have shown depth, after the song “Listen.” Watch her again, she just stares at Jamie Fox’s character, expressionless. It was a lackluster performance. And I have enjoyed her Cd’s since her Destiny’s Child days, and will continue to purchase her danceable tunes. As for Jennifer’s performance…simply remarkable. Jennifer has more range as an actress as well as a larger vocal range. I went to see the movie twice. Folks stood up during her solo performances. It was something special. Don’t get mad folks. We love Beyonce and she’ll get another crack at that oscar…

24 BIG pimpin Sun, Aug 12, 2007 - 4:09 pm

Man! forget beyonce and her family… Somebody tell her mother to stop making those damn dress…

25 o Sun, Aug 12, 2007 - 4:26 pm

And i dont know why jennifer said she hates gays… Did you know she have a gay lover? So stop the front girl.. ASK the nasty nati…

26 Sam G Wed, Sep 19, 2007 - 9:18 am

Ok with all that said at the end of the movie when B song listen she was not holding back I love Beyonce’s music but don’t like her she’s fake I love that movie it was just Jhud time

lets face it… JENNIFER HUDSON (MY GIRL!)is the heart & soul of DREAMGIRLS! dont get me wrong, i like beyonce but i love jhud.  her voice sends chills down my spine and beyonce’s voice doesn’t do that to me which means its J’s world. plus beyonce’s look is so boring right along w/ those tacky hair styes and weird looking dresses her mom keeps making. i agree about how they didnt show how backstabbing, sneaky and devious beyonce’s character “deena” was being. dat bitch was trifflin (read da book)i think it had something to do with her dad, but i aint the one to gossip…lol! i think that beyonce is a lil intimidated by jhud thats why in the movie she tries to constantly sing over jhud and make her voice all extra strong, but she cant hang with a 6 oct.  and lets face it beyonce cannot act and i think she should know that because its not for everybody. jhud is definetely da biness. sorry b gotta give it to JENNIFER HUDSON-LOVE YOU J

31 beyonce is a bitch! Sat, Nov 17, 2007 - 7:54 pm

beyonce’s voice have a cool sound.. dats all..

45 Lejuno Tue, Jun 09, 2009 - 11:39 am

Devante’s is just right. Beyonce’s voice has the potential to go any direction. Think of the track she did with the late Luther Vandross and the one she did with Mark Nelson for the Best Man Movie soundtrack. Now thats soul right there guys!!!!

46 shawna-kay Fri, Jul 24, 2009 - 6:40 pm

oh no,jennifer hudson all the way.beyonce stands no chance!

47 DD Mon, Sep 21, 2009 - 10:36 am

Both are very talented.  God gives all of us talents that we must use; not compare our talents to each other.  Jen is Jen and B is B, I love them both as artists because of their uniqueness.  Do we dare compare Aretha Franklin to Tina Turner and Tina Turner to Nancy Wilson and Nancy Wilson to Whitney Houston and Whitney Houston to Teena Marie to Patti LaBelle and so, on?  All of these super talented women use their God Given gifts.  Hats off to these women.  Stop the comparisons and be thankful for the gifts.

48 Norma Thu, Nov 12, 2009 - 4:44 pm

Jhud hands down. Unless you are talking about dancing. Singing Beyonce can not handel Jennifer no kind of way. I don’t know why people think Beyonce is all we have to offer, and thats a lie. She is very overrated and have been for sometime. Don’t get me wrong because Beyonce is doing her thing. Yes, she can dance and sing a little bit. There is nobody in the industry can sing like Jhud.

49 PLAYBOY69 Tue, Dec 01, 2009 - 4:16 pm

JENNY HUDSON IS “THE DREAM GIRL” SO HER VOICE & SEXIEST REIGN SUPREME…  I WILL F*CK JENNY HUDSON IS BBW SEXY-CHOCOLATE THUNDER ASS UNTIL HER SEXY CHOCOLATE FAT-ASS CAN’T SING ANOTHER NOTE IN BED!!!...LMAO!!! FORGET BEYONCE YELLOW-BONE “TOOTH PICK” ASS!...JENNY HUDSON IS “BIG GIRL” POWER… AND I LUV IT!

50 All Thu, Jan 27, 2011 - 4:09 pm

all i have to say is that you all who keep running around here talking about they beefing, unless you saw them beefing or heard them beefing directly you cant say anything.point blank

51 zurie Thu, Aug 18, 2011 - 2:11 pm

this is ridiculous ppl beyonce can sing yes i agree but ppl need 2 sit down and really listen to jhud that girl is great we are 2 blinded by the fact that she (beyonce) is a superstar who only got 2 the top cause ppl like me n u put her there.

52 Mario Sat, Mar 03, 2012 - 4:48 am

2012 and JHud is still doing the damn thang

53 Kourtnei Sun, Mar 18, 2012 - 1:28 am

Ms. Toni,
Jennifer, did not get booted off the show because she couldn’t control herself, she got voted off the show because chicago (her hometown) had a very bad thunderstorm and the power was out, so therefroe couldnt anybody call in for her. Both women have incredible voices, but Jennifer is a better singer. Beyonce is a better performer on stage, bt her vocal skills not touchin jennifers.

54 Hi Fri, Jun 12, 2015 - 7:02 am
