Got That Kanye? The Quest For Graduation is Harder Than You’d Think

Yesterday afternoon I mistakenly approached buying Kanye West’s new CD as a casual affair, as if there would be stacks of CDs sitting on the shelves. All the promotion behind him and 50 you’d think stores would have prepared with stacks of plastic touching the ceilings. I walked into Circuit City two minutes too late.

“Got that Kanye?”
“Nope”

The clerk nodded towards someone’s smiling mom, “She just bought the last two.”

Guess I’ll go to Target. Looking. Searching. Nothing. There’s a clerk..

“You have Kanye West’s CD?”
“We sold out.”

I laughed because it’s looking like Kanye is winning the Soundscan battle. Let’s see.

“What about 50?”
“Umm.” *Yells to cashier* ‘Any 50?’ .. “We have one, you want it?”

“Nope.”

Now it’s a trip to Virgin Megastore. They’ve got to have a truckload.

They not only had the CD, they had Kanye West himself. It was the location of his in-store appearance. Caught DJ Premier shopping around, the big bear balloon outside. (Those pics are wireimaged. Didn’t have my camera.)

With cops, spotlights, and white sunglass wearing Kanye West fanatics stretched outside Virgin Megastore, it was a nice little scene. What the fans didn’t know, but a nanny dropped while I was at a newsstand, is that Kanye lives/stays right near Virgin Megastore (Union Square). A car picked him up and basically drove him around the corner. So go knock on his door sometime.

The sole purpose of buying the CD was to give Kanye that one extra digit on the first day of the Soundscan battle between good and ‘evil.’ More importantly, these days, any CD I put money on has got to be something I’ll actually listen to.

So far Kanye is winning that battle on both ends.

The early projections are that he’ll hit 750 - 800k.

50 is currently at 600 - 650k. Final numbers will be available next Tuesday.

I live in Pittsburgh, and you’ve gotta imagine that CD was only a quick trip down to Best Buy. They had like 100 copies out, ready to sell.  I wouldn’t be surprised if I was only the third dude to roll in in buy one at like 2:30.

To be honest, I don’t think he’ll ever make a CD better than College Dropout; he’s far from it on this one.

But Curtis?  Please.  50’s the wackest dude since…  Damn, I think he out-wacks every wack rapper combined.

i went to target on wednesday thinking they’d have plenty of Kanye.. They were completly sold out and ONLY had shelves of 50.. makes me wonder if they undershipped or something. OR did that many people REALLY support the cd that heavy? I had to buy mine on Itunes.. shoulda did that to begin with..

I was never a big Kanye fan but he put together a really good CD.  Kanye did what he ussually does and thats be creative while Courtney/Curtis is on that Ja Rule shit.  He thinks he can put anything out and people are going to buy it because of who he is.  Not anymore, after his numbers fall to about 4-5million worldwide he will realize that he is missing about 4-5 million more sales.  The bottom line is this, for music (hip hop) to get better we have to support music that people actually care about and then the record execs will push for moore good music instead of whatever the latest trend is.

Kanye’s beats are good and 50 just fell off w/o dre producing the whole album….hasn’t he made enough money??????......“power of the dollar” “guess whos back” are 50’s best albums….kanye’s first album was hot…..but there too glamed out, the music is lacking and they both plain don’t give a shit because they both know whatever they put out reguardless of if it’s good or not is going to sell.
