Jay-Z, Mary J, Blige on the David Letterman show

Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige on The Late Show with David Letterman

Last night, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige were on The Late Show with David Letterman. These days, Jay-Z hits the couch before he performs. So he and Mary walk out. Jay slumps in the first chair, doing his Usual Suspects-let-me-play-aloof thing and was asked why they decided to tour together. Jay briefly mentioned the R. Kelly fiasco and moved on, but David Letterman went back for the scoop.

This time Jay told a story about R. Kelly arguing with a sound man and leaving the concert to work the drive-thru at McDonalds. Not a new story, but funny in the way he tells it.

They performed “Can’t Knock the Hustle.” When that song was first released, the rumor was Mary’s label wouldn’t let her participate in it as a single/video. Thinking, who is this Jay-Z character? Mary got the nod to do Method Man’s “All I Need” though. 10 years later, that is definitely reversed.

Jay is liquid clear on the lyrics. Mary sang well, but that dancing? Awkward.

You must not be that familiar with Mary J. because that’s how she always dances and people have come to accept her bad dancing as only something she can get away with.  See Mick Jagger.  Also, 10 years later, what has reversed?  Method Man’s position as opposed to Jay-Z’s or Mary’s position as opposed to Jay-Z’s?  The former I agree, but the latter I disagree.  Both Mary and Jay are still doing it big and I can’t wait to see them in concert in Atlanta this Tuesday.  Thanks for posting the video.

Her dancing is pretty damn bad!

3 BLAMBO Sun, Apr 06, 2008 - 12:39 am

I personally could live without her singing too. She does have great songs but her voice is average at best.

I enjoyed the performance on the show. Mary has the moves, and the voice. So those of you that don’t like Mary, can hate on, cause she has passed the test.

I love Jay to death, but am I the only one that is getting a little sick of him?

8 Kelvin Sun, Apr 06, 2008 - 4:09 pm

No you clearly aren’t the only one getting sick of him. I have been sick of all the undeserving credit that he has always gotten.

Mary is very soulful, the dancing is just a nice little 2 step, stop hating, its all good! Do your thing girl, and Jay z got that mean swagger…I enjoyed both of them…

Mary is very soulful but only if she could sing she would be the full package.

Hmmm….I wonder did this interview take place before…of after the wedding…lol(chuckles to self)

Teacup..
Reversed, meaning, today Method Man is more likely to be denied a co-video shot with Mary than Jay.

She’s doing the “brooklyn wop”. That never goes out of style. Take a trip to NY. Stop by Brooklyn.

14 Prada Mon, Apr 07, 2008 - 12:21 pm

Apparently the “brooklyn wop” does go out of style.

Its apparent that the writer of this piece has no knowledge of urban New York hiphop dance.  Those moves that Mary does is no different than how the folks in urban NY move to the feel of a hot beat.  You can hate it or love it.

Mary is still doing the same dance she was doing in the 411 and My life era..lol..She’s still the sh*t though..and her singing has improooved alot..

Their show was off the hook in DC. I which we had a surprise guest, nonetheless, they rocked the house last Sunday - after the wedding!??LOL!!

Mary does the same dances we all do in the mirror when your song comes on - don’t hate on her..I know you are not expecting her to get out there and dance like Ciara. She is grown now, consider her “grooving”.
