Who hasn’t seen the “Leave Britney Alone” video? If not you aren’t one of the 3 million+ people on the planet (give or take a couple hundred thousand replays) that have. It’s a freakish web hit. When I first saw the lack of tears in his very tearful request, my immediate reaction was it was faked for a traffic jam - the server kind.

A very quick YouTube search didn’t pull up a thing, but it was there. In fact that ‘guy’, Chris Crocker, has nearly 70 videos, all of them as flamboyant and ranty as the first. It was not an act - or was it?

In a video posted a week before Britney’s performance he showed an enormous amount of Britney memorabilia in his room: everything from CDs to posters, magazines to stickers. All happy. Looking like he couldn’t wait until the big VMA day. Crocker said it was his first celebrity video and got right to talking about his love for Spears (I’m gonna refrain from the obvious joke.)

There were four other videos before Britney day, but only one relating to her - his version of “Gimme More.”

The comments say it all..

“Disturbing. Absolutely disturbing. Even adults should not see this stuff.”

“You’re uncomfortably flamboyant. I don’t care if you’re gay, that’s fine. But holy sh—have some shame, man.”

“Jesus if Britney was depressed before, wait till she sees this.”

The best.. “Removed for terms of use violation.”

Then came the VMAs and the resulting Britney bashing, Crocker’s sunshine turned to acid tears - the birth of “Leave Britney Alone.” Besides the gay slaps on his YouTube page, some people still believe the video is fake.

In an interview conducted yesterday on Salon.com, Crocker says it’s as real as.. Britney.

In the YouTube comment thread, people are saying that you aren’t really crying—they can’t see your tears. They’re saying that you’re just acting and that this is a way to make yourself famous. What do you think about that?

“Well my channel started out as video blogging, and then it kind of turned into acting, and overall my channel is a combination of those things. This was a blog straight from the heart.

As for the tears, I filmed it in front of the window, and the lighting kind of washes out your face. If you watch it in full screen, you can see my tears. I wasn’t being disingenuous in any way. And I wasn’t in any way being sarcastic or cynical. I love Britney, and that can be seen in another video of mine entitled “Back up, Britney haters!” in which I have thousands of Britney magazines and memorabilia on my floor. Obviously I didn’t hire someone to come over with a Britney dump and just dump it. I’m a real Britney fan.

Why do you do the YouTube videos? Are you trying to break into the entertainment business?

“I didn’t do the Britney to cross over to mass media. My very first video got 8 million views. And I don’t usually do videos about celebrities—I think it’s tacky. I did this because I care about Britney and I’m a fan. But if anything, I thought it would turn off my audience because they’re not used to me talking about celebrities and pop culture. I talk about everything from AIDS to pubic hair. I don’t just talk about celebrities; it’s kind of sad that this is my introduction to mass media.”

Q:  Are you coming out with a TV show?
A:  I am PURSUING a TV show.. now, what that means (for me) is that I’m talking to different directors. The directors I’m talking to are very endearing, and quite assuring.. so who knows! I’m not betting my money on anything, and I’m definitely not putting all of my eggs in one basket. What I have to keep in mind, and what I’d love for you guys to remember also, is that things take time.

Q:  Was that really your brother in ‘Brotherly Love’?
A: “I want everyone to take a moment to READ MY PROFILE. I’m an entertainer. Of course that wasn’t my brother. Almost every video I make with the exception of a couple speeches, are skits.. and if they’re not skits- they’re footage of me during a sugar rush, if you know what I mean. I never post videos of me being completely myself because that would be pointless. I make videos to entertain - not to overexpose myself.

Q:  What are your plans for your immediate future?
A:  I’m juggling quite a few projects. At this very moment I am preparing for a big-time interview next week… I’m designing T-shirts for all of my Chris Crocker Cheerleaders, and after that- I’m recording a duet with Chingy’s sister, Ziggy.. as well as pushing this TV series! And after that- I’ll hopefully be talking shit on a TV set nearest you.
