Lil Mama Bringing Lip Gloss-Esteem to Women
It was two days ago that a cousin of mine asked me what I thought about Lil Mama. I told her I wasn’t on the Lil Mama train yet, should have added that I was a grown man who would look pretty in pink hopping around, yapping about his lip gloss.
Of course I joke, don’t have to be in line for Mac products to appreciate the Lil Mama sensation. While it might not be a country-wide phenomenon, Lil Mama is easily becoming the Voice of the Young People.
In today’s Village Voice, “The Makeup test”she speaks on the secret ingredient in her Lip Gloss.
‘Lip Gloss’ is not a regular bubblegum song, because it stands for something. It’s a self-esteem song for women..
“When you say, like, ‘The boys, they chase me after school,’ it’s telling a young girl that you don’t have to chase boys. I do what I do for myself, and things that I do for myself will bring boys to me. And when you continue to sing it and sing it, you believe it. It’s much bigger than just a simple bubblegum song.”
In an earlier MTV interview she added.. “Every day when I go to school, not only myself, but other girls, forget it, lip gloss in the morning. You don’t understand. If you go to high school ... you gonna see them [she starts making a hand motion like she’s applying lip gloss].”
“You’re gonna feel like it just brings everything together.”
Being the voice of the young people, you have to take a stand on the issues of the day.
Lil Wayne: “I feel like he’s very vulgar and disrespectful to women, and I don’t like that, but certain songs I can really relate to.”
Don Imus and the resulting Hip-Hop criticism:“Just because I rap and I sing and I do all these things, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that all these people are wrong.”
Things young girls can relate to - a first kiss?
“Do I really have to answer this question?”

Her career has no choice but to skyrocket, it’s the Plan A. She left high school before recording “Lip Gloss.”
As the Voice it’s the one dry spot on her shine.
Passion is the explanation.
“I knew that this was something I wanted to do, and this is something that I went after really hard. It’s my career. It’s something that I love.”
