No Basketball For Greg Oden. Out for the Year With the Dime Curse

How crazy is it that for all the hype surrounding Greg Oden he will not play a single NBA game this season?

That micro-fracture knee surgery is going to require an entire year to heal. Which means the most court action he’s going to see will be wearing a suit sitting next to an assistant coach. I think I found the cause of his unfortunate plight. He was on the cover of this month’s Dime magazine. Check the headline right next to his head.

That’s not talking about his current situation. The Greg Oden headline is “Great Expectations.” “Stay Injury Free This Season” is a training primer for the up and coming. Greg Oden’s been cursed by association.

Joke aside. It’s too bad for him in the realest of ways.

There is chatter about it being lucky the surgery happened before the NBA draft, which means he’s got some guaranteed dollars in his pocket. However he has a couple of endorsement deals which haven’t been finalized yet. Endorsements = the gravy on the potatoes. The injury might play a part in those deals going through. Greg Oden is said to be pretty dejected about the whole thing. He was looking forward to the season. The majority of the Portland Trailblazer team showed up extra-early to begin training and figuring out how they’re going to prove the youngins got game.

On the bright side Greg Oden is just 19-years-old - he should heal up quick. And the surgery wasn’t as major as it could have been. But he’ll have to work even harder now to prove he was worth that number one pick. I hear someone’s marker squeaking up Sam Bowie posters to stick in the air as cruel reminders when Kevin Durant skips through Portland.

In the DIME interview Oden talked about his love for 300 (the movie).

“I don’t watch sports on TV. I watch shows and movies, but not much basketball. I love going to games; I even love going to baseball games. But not so much on TV. I like being out of the house. I love being around people… I’m real big on Walmart. I love Walmart. Back in Indy, I’d go there and get some Gushers candy, some Zebra cakes, and then go to the movie section to get a DVD. I love DVDs. My favorite movie is American Pie 2. I can’t even tell you why. I like Stomp the Yard; I love 300 - I was just watching that in my room today. If I didn’t have all this stuff going on, I’d probably still be back in the room watching that.”

So it’s not a question what he’ll be doing, it’s how many times x 300 he’s going to watch it this year.

Get good young fella.

Can you call him young when he’s looking like 40 plus?
