Rihanna “Disturbia”  The Invisible Video Premiere

The video for Rihanna’s song of the summer, “Disturbia” debuted yesterday. I’d link you to it but Universal Music has this great idea that their artist’s music videos shouldn’t be posted on any sites but there own and so-called official outlets ie. those that pay them for video distribution. I know that sounds legit, but that’s not how it’s been done since.. I don’t know, Jackie’s “Thriller” debut.”

The NY Times

“Universal Music Group of Vivendi Universal says it will no longer provide music videos free, or at a nominal cost, to Internet and cable television services that are building a potentially giant business by playing videos on demand. Universal does not want to repeat what it considers the music industry’s ill-fated decision in the 1980’s to provide free videos to MTV.”

It’s why this..

is no longer available.

Oh, you’ll be able to find it if you look hard enough. Like this one..

Rihanna “Disturbia”

but catch it while you can. They have a band of people chasing the video off of YouTube. What a great way to promote an artist: shoot a superb video and then don’t let anyone actually see the thing.

Think of all the sites that are willing to give Rihanna a free 3 minute plug for her ‘brand.’ Which is all a music video is, and ever was. That.. Universal.. is why MTV ‘got away’ with launching their company without paying you a dime. It’s free fucking advertising.

I’d go on, but what for?

You see that new Rihanna video? Nope. “content has been deleted.”
