Why Did I Get Married

Why Did I Get Married? Takes The Number One Spot

Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married” took the number one spot this weekend with $21 million. Not surprising given that there were people stumbling into the theater like they haven’t been to the movies in 10 years. For whatever reason, Tyler Perry brings out a part of the public that feels like finally a movie was made for them.
Some people only go to see black movies (to their own detriment.) “Why Did I Get Married” is one of the better ‘black’ movies in that there is none of the over the top comedy and hood themes that pervade much of what’s considered essential to black movies.

Like the feel of the upcoming “This Christmas’ it casts a, much needed, different shade of light. It’s easy to see why the cast made it to Oprah’s couch.

It’s not really a black movie though. It’s a film about the quirks that exist in the marriages of four couples who could be of any race.

There’s the husband who feels his wife is more concerned about her career than her family (and him).

The husband who blatantly criticizes his wife about her weight.

The couple who seems to have it all together but hold a secret pain.

And the wife who likes a drink or two, says what she pleases, to anyone, constantly reminding her husband that he’s unemployed - well, employed by her.

The couples go on vacation in the Colorado mountains, it’s there that the four couples stories unfold. There are some slow scenes, some soap opera-ish tender moments, but overall it works.

Jill Scott - Why Did I Get Married

One scene that stuck in my head is Jill Scott (Sheila, the overweight wife) she’s in a car for self, on a long, snowy road, she’s determined to make it to the vacation house to save her marriage. This despite her husband flaunting an obvious side piece, as the family friend, and his in-the-face slams about her weight.

Jill Scott had the right amount of innocence to make the moment, and the character, work. She felt like.. The Real Thing.

Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White - Why Did I Get Married

From the first scene, Tasha Smith’s loud mouth kept things from becoming dull and overly-sweet. And her husband, Michael Jai White was straight comedy. Why when he walked in the bedroom shirtless was there nothing but laughter in the audience at his cartoon-like muscles?

Tyler Perry, Micahel Jai White - Why Did I Get Married

I’ve never seen a Tyler Perry movie because the whole Madea, I’m a man in woman’s clothing thing, didn’t pull me in. Here he leaves the wig at home and was one of the more natural actors in the movie.

Tasha Smith, Janet Jackson, Sharon Neal - Why Did I Get Married

Janet Jackson had some stiff, forced scenes, but she fit the character. Even Malik Yoba was a little weak, but in the mix with the other guys, his ‘softness’ was authentic.

Overall it’s a fine piece of movie making that will surely give Tyler Perry continued success in Hollywood. How about this for an endorsement? I’d buy the DVD.

Give him the praise it deserves and stop hatin people!!!!! I watch “white” character movies all the time w/ no problem, so i just wish that people would stop trying to make when his movies come out, a racist thing!!!!!Its a damn great movie!!!!!

2 Frankie Smith Mon, Oct 15, 2007 - 11:34 am

I think this was the best movie I seen in years. I don’t consider this a black movie, but a family movie. I encourage everyone that enjoys movies to please go and see this work of art as far as movies go.

The movie was GREAT and several of my couple friends we all went together. It gave a very good insight on relationships and how to make things happened if you have faith in God and each other. The person I went with was not sure he would like the movie but after seeing the show we had a great in conversation on how couples Black or White can change to make there lives more loving for each other and being truth equal partner takes TWO.

it was a very good movie that i enjoyed this weekend. i actually think it deserves some academy award status. I would suggest that if your in a marraige with issues, like who hasn’t,go see this film, you will relate to the storyline

5 Morgana Mon, Oct 15, 2007 - 2:25 pm

Went to go see this movie with a bunch of friends. It was great, something we could all relate to, even though none of us are married. I too, will be buying the DVD when it comes out.

I have read the responses before writing mine and I was very pleased to read honest words and not mean hateful words.

The movie was not racist. A black man wrote a movie with black people as the main characters. Yet every race can relate to this movie one way or the other.  We all know of someone in this movie.  We all can learn from this movie, if we choose too.  I will be adding this movie to my collection. I will say that I feel that this movie is Tyler Perry’s best work so far.

As a black woman, I was proud to see a movie with black people in it that were cussing, on drugs, shooting and robbing.  We spoke correct english and had jobs/careers to support families instead of selling drugs.  We had friends that issues but stuck together instead of tearing one another apart.  The movie was as deep as you wanted it to be or as light as you wanted it to be.  The movie was real.  Take the sales lady in the store. “We don’t keep cash in the store”.  You can make light of it, but it still happens.

All and all, it was a damn good movie.

@Tenia

Just asking, where is / was the “hate”?

Seems as if the movie got VERY good reviews online, via critics, and apparently with movie goers!
Where does your “racist” and “stop the hatin” comment come from?

(scratches head..insert scooby do huh? here)

8 ohso kool Mon, Oct 15, 2007 - 4:07 pm

OK..I cant be the only person who “seent” this.
I gotta poke fun, but its all in jest:

Classic. LOL!

9 Nuklehid Mon, Oct 15, 2007 - 6:21 pm

I can’t begin to understand why white folks are so up and arms against this movie.  Give an oscar to “Its so hard for a pimp”, but a movie about professional blacks, give it two thumbs down?

Stop hating ya’ll.

10 Jan Mon, Oct 15, 2007 - 10:37 pm

This movie was the best I’ve seen in years.  My girlfriend and I were crying, laughing. We could identify with EACH of the characters as someone we know.

Tyler Perry has become one of the better writers because this is a movie that everyone will enjoy watching on the screen and most certainly purchase on a DVD.

Go brother, go brother, go….

I really enjoyed this movie. I am glad that God has blessed Tyler Perry. He is a black, successful brother, & I will give him his praise, “A JOB WELL DONE”...this is a great movie….

12 Churchladie2 Tue, Oct 16, 2007 - 12:45 am

I really enjoyed the movie. Best one I have seen in a very long time. Great cast..  Tyler, you are only getting better. Congratulations on a movie well done! And to Ohso Kool, It is not KOOL to poke at someone’s mistake. It was obvious she left out the words “I WAS PROUD NOT TO SEE A MOVIE WITH BLACK PEOPLE… ” ect.  Hopefully you have more things to do than correct other peoples reviews…. Get a life!

13 Denise Tue, Oct 16, 2007 - 8:07 am

I enjoy the movie. I laughed so much at Tasha loud mouth because oh did she play her part or what. LOL!
I love it when they spoke about “grits”. Tyler I gave you my weekend because I saw this movie three times. Yes, indeed have the DVD ready for the Christmas and you will make MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY!
Keep up the good work!

I liked the movie myself. I didn’t like the way it ended and the low budget snow on the rooftop at the cabin was killin me softly lol hahah But other than that I loved Tasha’s role. She played that very well and her part did hold the movie up [in my opinion].

I love Tyler for his positive movies. Even Ma’dea makes me laugh. I don’t look at the fact that its a man in a womans outfit, I see it as he has this vision of this character of a woman and see’s himself as playing out the vision better than anyone else can. I wonder if he actually cast the character of madea out to a woman actress if they would be able to do her justice. Ma’dea is supposed to be comedy.

I think Tyler Perry, starting out homeless and ending with as a well known writer, producer etc of movies and more he has done very well for himself. Happy for ya…Keep up the positive movies 😊

15 Bree Tue, Oct 16, 2007 - 2:01 pm

22 TIffany Wed. Oct. 17th, 2007 Wed, Oct 17, 2007 - 2:51 pm

This movie is one of the best I’ve seen all year. I hate when everything has to be viewed as quote, “why are there no white actors or actresses”. Somethings are just about us and for us. Why isn’t that okay? Remember when the first movie came out, all the reviews said it could only get 1 star do to the type of movie. Well, I say keep them coming.I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!

23 Shakira Wed, Oct 17, 2007 - 4:57 pm

This movie was awesome.Tyler Perry greatest movie ever. The cast was phenomenal.Tasha Smith you represented for Camden girl. Why did i get married was for every race to see. Why do folks always got to make it a race issues… I am quite sure the white audience could adapt to this movie as well. Good job

24 Vanessa - Thurs, 2007- 9:45 pm Wed, Oct 17, 2007 - 11:31 pm

34 al Sun, Nov 18, 2007 - 8:16 pm

The movie was good but not academy award good. For starters, Janet Jackson can not act. I can think of many other ‘actresses’ that could have really done that role justice. Malik Yoba, dude go back to NY Undercover… Jill Scott’s role didn’t fit her at all, she’s too strong of a woman to be suited for such a role… her role was not convincing at all (well maybe at the very end of the movie). I would have waited to get this on Netflix but because I was treated to this movie… oh well. THREE Stars…

35 al, go crawl back to your cave Sun, Feb 17, 2008 - 6:04 pm

Janet Jackson can act, and there was nothing wrong with the rest of the people you mentioned either.
